Laboratory of Energy Transformation in Renewable Energy

Pavilion C-5, premises 501

Research subject:

The subject of the research refers to explore the types of renewable energy solutions, solar panels, photovoltaic panels, mini wind turbines (integrated with the building), and other various manufacturers and provide them with AGH University certification.  Laboratory research, which is going to be accomplished within this research, concerns about amount of produced energy, generated efficiency and energy both in the laboratory and the field (tower). As for future practical applications in large scale, it is planned to carry a test of resistance to external conditions, solutions, performance over time and etc. For this purpose, comprehensive research are going to be carried out covering both measurements in a controlled environment (Simulator in room 501) and field inspections at the tower. Standardization of the installations and connections will allow dynamic implementation of potential research projects and ensure possibility of quick connection to equipment within the same measuring instruments.

Explored renewable energy solutions could be used in different applications, as in constructions, including passive construction which is almost zero energy. Therefore there is observed considerable increase in comprehensive energy solutions for constructions, such as coupling the solar collectors and heat pumps with heat recovery systems and air ventilation. There was also developed a cooling system using solar radiation (such as absorption refrigerators). And it is a very favorable energy solution due to excess solar heat during the summer months, which can be used as electricity for cooling rooms. Studies of increasingly fashionable but relatively “young” issues give wide leeway in creating utility models and patents. The proposed conditions due to access to the tower provide excellent opportunities for exploring various solutions for this issue.

A description on how to use equipment in the context of planned research and the implementation of established research projects.

The use of equipment will be based on the study of solutions from different manufacturers. For testing solar collectors or photovoltaic panels it is planned to perform tests in accordance with the applicable standards and procedures carried out by ordering the tests. In the case of tests on the simulator, the equipment manufacturer will be under investigation for obtaining energy in such environment. It is planned to assemble the system and collect measurement data in dedicated electronics system of measurement. Time-dependent tests from the test program are matter of agreement upon with the manufacturer. Then (after the transfer of the test item to the tower) field studies will be carried out. Dedicated measuring sets will record all necessary data from sensors. As a result of the research, reports will be made according to the characteristics in the order from manufacturer.

Similar process is going to be held with other systems.

Complex systems like renewable hybrid electronics systems will be configured in accordance with the manufacturer's solutions and further research will be carried out as above.

Within the framework of  research projects of AGH it will be possible to accomplish several studies, including examination of the different components of solar collectors (e.g. absorbers, transparent insulation, thermal media, etc.) depending on modifications that can be performed (e.g. cover absorbers, etc.) and new solutions, which can be done under the various projects of AGH.

It is possible to conduct a lot of research work on each of these presented sets, such as:

  • study on efficiency of energy generation using renewable sources, both in pilot installations and commercial activity,
  • striving to improve the efficiency of energy generation, particularly in the context of the polygeneration,
  • feasibility of energy diversification at the level of the single household,
